Iggy interviews an Optometric Assistant

My friend Miss Nathalie works as an Optometric Assistant.

(Optometric assistants are typically responsible for fitting patients with suitable eyewear, following an optometrist's prescription. For example, they may help patients select frames and adjust them to fit comfortably. They may also operate laboratory equipment to grind, polish, or cut lenses for glasses.)

I’m so happy that she agreed to this interview so that we can learn more about her job and get to know her as a person…

Hello Miss Nathalie! Thanks so much for agreeing to this interview today!

Where were you born?

I was born in Ottawa, Ontario on Christmas Eve!

What’s a special memory you have as a kid growing up?

The most special memories I have are the summers I spent with my family in Spain.

Do you have any siblings?

I have one brother. He is 2 years younger than me and one of my best friends.

What was your favorite subject in school?

I didn’t have a specific favorite subject in school but was very interested in all social sciences.

What is something you’re really proud of?

I’m so very proud of my daughter and the woman she has become. She took a leap of faith 4 years ago and is now living her best life in Spain!

What do you like to do when you’re not working at your job?

My favorite things to do are traveling, reading books, and spending time with my friends and family.

Who has been a positive influence in your life?

My mom. She’s always encouraged my brother and I to do our best, to never give up on our dreams, and to always see the positive in every situation.

If you could hang out with someone for a day, who would that person be?

I would spend time with my dad. He passed away 7 years ago and I miss him a lot.

What’s your favorite chip flavor?

My favorite chip flavor is Ketchup. It’s tangy but also sweet.

If you could only eat one food choice for a month, what would that food be?

I would eat ice cream!!

Have you traveled outside of Canada? If so, where did you go?

I have been fortunate enough to travel outside of Canada many times. I have visited Spain many many times since the age of 4. I have also traveled to France, the USA, Cuba, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, and Mexico.

Why did you choose to be an Optometric Assistant?

I chose to become an Optometric Assistant because of the seamless combination of 2 different fields. Medicine and Fashion. Not only do I get to help patients take care of their eyes and eyesight but I also have the pleasure of working with them to help find fashionable glasses that best suit their style.

What skills did you need to learn to be good at your job?

Aside from the technical skills, I would say that good communication and listening skills are important.

What do you like best about your job?

What I love most about my job is that I get to meet people from different walks of life, every day. I really enjoy chatting with them and getting to know them. I especially enjoy helping each of them find the most perfect pair of glasses.

What advice would you give a kid if they wanted to do your job someday?

Don’t be afraid to get to know people, communicate, listen, smile, have fun, and most importantly be your most authentic self.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions, Miss Nathalie! I hope to see you again soon!
