What is the importance of reading?

Learning to read is about listening and understanding as well as working out what is printed on the page. Through hearing stories, people are exposed to a wide range of words. This helps them build a vocabulary of their own and improve their understanding when they listen, which is an important skill as they start to read.

How can reading change the world?

You can learn about and understand the world better by reading.

Reading opens up so many possibilities!

Some other cool reasons to read

✔️It can help you to relax

✔️You can learn about so much stuff

✔️You use more of your right brain

✔️You can improve your focus

✔️You can learn about feelings

✔️You might feel inspired to become a writer

I love to read because it helps me to relax and I love reading to my stuffies and to my mom. And all that makes me happy.

Has reading helped you in your life?

If you want to share your thoughts, just send me a note. I’ll be really happy to read it.

Reading books allows you to discover more about a subject.

I am fascinated by how one human, Tim Horton, had such a huge impact on the lives of other humans in the world.

Perhaps you’ll want to explore these two books and be inspired to follow your dream!

No Snow for Seth

Written by Jean Davis Callaghan

Illustrated by Mikke Wotton

Reviewed by Iggy T Hippo

Seth really really loves snow.

In the wintertime, he spends hours outside playing in it, sliding on his sled and gliding on his skis.  He loves it so much that sometimes he likes to play inside the house with snow that he keeps in a jar in the freezer.

It is on a warm and sunny springtime day that Seth discovers what happens to snow when it's left out on the kitchen table for too long. It’s a big moment for a little kid.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories about snow and science and feelings all mixed in together.

LET’S COOK
(Featuring Elmo from Sesame Street)
Written by Susan McQuillan, RD (registered dietician)

I have a dream to write a cookbook someday.
This special book is an inspiration and a helpful guide for how to do it well.
I borrowed it from the library but I like it so much that I’m saving my allowance and birthday money so I can have my very own copy someday.

In this book, you will learn the ABC’s of healthy food and then you can apply this new knowledge by exploring and testing (and eating!) many nutritious and delicious recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, side dishes, snacks and desserts ideas.

The recipes are quite easy to follow and include food that you most likely already have in your fridge or cupboards. The author offers several alternatives just in case you don’t.

The illustrations are really helpful too. Seeing what the finished product is going to look like, helps me a lot.
The Sesame Street characters all share some interesting real life facts that helped me learn more about food, math, shapes and language too...together, they are like a buffet of knowledge!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about which foods are the best ones for your (growing) body, how to use them in recipes and then enjoy them in some creative way everyday.

No Peas for Nellie

Story and pictures by Chris L. Demarest

Nellie is pretty sure she doesn’t like peas.

But she likes dessert.

And that’s enough to motivate Nellie to try just one pea…..

Nellie’s dinner turns into a fun imaginary safari adventure where she describes all sorts of creatures that she says she would prefer to eat, instead of the green peas on her plate!

This book is both funny and beautifully illustrated.

Back to the Cabin

Written and illustrated by Ann Blades

At first, Jack and Angus don’t want to go to the cabin and leave the tv and video games and soccer field behind, but that all changes once they get there.

The boys get to roast wieners over the campfire, go fishing, build a new dock and even build a fort!

By the end of the holiday, the boys don’t want to leave!

This is a feel-good and beautifully illustrated book.

This is a really special story about a mommy and her son.

In the book, we meet the little boy as a newborn. We watch him grow and grow into a toddler, a teenager and then a man. And at every stage of his life, once her son is fast asleep, she sings him a sweet and tender song…

I’ll love you forever

I’ll like you for always

As long as I’m living

My baby you’ll be

This book is all about what a deep love between people looks like.

We’re Different, We’re The Same

(And we’re all wonderful)

Written by Bobbi Jane Kates

Illustrated by Joe Mathieu

In this book, the Sesame Street characters remind us that although we may look very different on the outside, it’s important to remember that deep down, we are so much alike because we all have feelings and fears and hopes and dreams…

I highly recommend this book for people of all ages as a learning book or as a reminder book.

When Bear’s friends ask him to go out to play, he tells them that he can’t join them because he feels really sick.

Instead of leaving their friend behind, they work together as a team to take care of him.

All of their kindness is returned to them by Bear when he feels better and they get sick!

This friendship book is sweet and the illustrations are beautiful!

One Special Tree

By Olena Kassian

Choosing a Christmas tree is a special tradition for some families.

In this book, instead of the family choosing the tree, the tree seems to choose the family it wants to be with.

At the Christmas tree lot, Zoe spots her perfect tree. It’s a little tree that’s been dumped into a corner, far away from the taller and fuller trees that are for sale. This little tree is thin and some of its branches have snapped right off.

Feeling sorry for the tree, the little girl pleads with her parents to take it home.

With lots of love and lots of decorations, this special tree was never perfect in appearance, but it sure was special.

This book is filled with examples of kindness, compassion, and love and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful.
