Mom and I saw this at the Community Center the other day. We stood chatting about it for a bit and then she took a picture. We had a plan.

When we got home, we printed the picture and cut between the words so we each could take a word for the week and stick it up somewhere where we would see it a few times a day. I have my word taped to my toothbrush.

Whatever your word, the idea is to bring your awareness to it during the day for a week. And during that time, you’ll probably find ways to bring the word into action. Then, after a week, you can pick a new word, and so on. After awhile, you’ll need to make a new poster with new words. 🙂

TAKE WHAT YOU

NEED

I chose Patience ( being patient ) for my word this week.

What is another word for patience? ( being patient )

Noun

  • The capacity (ability) to accept or tolerate delay, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed (mad) or anxious

  • The quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate

  • The quality of being empathetic ( understanding )

Similar words…

Calm, tolerant, understanding, gentle, accepting, cool, even-tempered.

Opposite words…

Impatient, agitated, frustrated, irritable, intolerant, angry

A person might think they’re a patient person when everything is “going their way”.

Like when you get to do exactly what you want or get whatever you want at the moment you want these things.

Those times are great when they happen, but there’s always going to be days when that doesn’t happen for you.

Like when….

You have to wait in a long lineup and you’re tired or hungry or bored

Or

You have to wait for your baby brother or sister to be dressed before you can go outside to play

Or

When you want mommy or daddy to play with you but they have to finish their work first

Or

When you have to wait for your turn on the swings or slide…

These times can be super hard and frustrating too.

Here are a few tips that I learned and I practice when things don’t go the way I want them to go.

  1. First thing I do is take a breath. Maybe two or three. (This gives me some time to think about what I’m going to do next.)

  2. I focus (think about) on how fun it’ll be when I get to do the thing ( or have the thing )

  3. Sing a song or make one up! ( this little activity will pass the time )

  4. I remind myself that I can’t always get what I want. That’s life!

  5. I tell myself that “it’s ok if I’m disappointed right now ( or frustrated or mad ) but I’m going to practice being patient because I have choices.

And I remind myself to never ever give up trying when I don’t succeed at being patient every time.

The art of being patient or having patience comes with practice. Just like with any other skill.

If you have some ideas/tips to share, send me a note.

I’ll be here waiting patiently! 🙂

I like this word…I like how it sounds when I say it and I like what it stands for…

  • I like the idea of people getting along and respecting each other. Fighting and hurting somebody else is never really a good idea.

  • Although I don’t mind loud noises from mighty machines, fireworks or music concerts, I find that after a while I need to find a quiet place or get some peace from the sounds.

  • Being at peace in my body is a great feeling. It’s worth my time and energy to make sure that I get enough exercise and rest and food so that my body has the best chance at feeling that feeling.

  • When I think about PEACE, I visualize a circle of people (with their pets and stuffies), all around the world, singing and dancing and smiling and happy together. I like that picture in my mind.

  • Peace is a choice. I think it’s a good and life-changing one…

I’d love to know your thoughts on this word…maybe through a little note or some art or a poem…

Peace,

Iggy ❤️

My Word of the week this week is Inspiration

What does inspiration mean?

According to Word Hippo (online dictionary) inspiration means all of this!!!

Noun:

*(physiology) The drawing of air into the lungs, accomplished in mammals by elevation of the chest walls and flattening of the diaphragm, as part of the act of respiration.

(countable) A breath, a single inhalation.

*A supernatural divine influence on the prophets, apostles, or sacred writers, by which they were qualified to communicate moral or religious truth with authority; a supernatural influence which qualifies people to receive and communicate divine truth; also, the truth communicated.

*The act of an elevating or stimulating influence upon the intellect, emotions or creativity.

*A person, object, or situation which quickens or stimulates an influence upon the intellect, emotions or creativity.

*A new idea, especially one which arises suddenly and is clever or creative.

(This is the definition that we’ll focus on for today)

My inspiration experience…

I was inspired to create my website after spending a day reading some past issues of the Kids STAR newspaper. (That was a newspaper written especially for kids by some very clever and creative kids.)

I borrowed some of the great ideas that they had come up with and then I was inspired to add some new stuff.

And since I love working on my website, I find that I continue to be inspired….cool eh?

So, here’s the question…where does the inspiration come from? How is it that, all of a sudden, an idea just shows up in your head?

Although I don’t really know the answers, I’m happy that inspiration exists.

Have you ever been inspired to make or create something?

Maybe you’ll be inspired to send me a note and tell me all about it! 😀

I chose kindness as my word this week.

I wanted to be sure that I knew what I could do to bring the word into action, so I looked up the definition.

What is kindness in simple words?

According to the dictionary, kindness is defined as the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.

Kindness is more than deeds.
It is an attitude, an expression, a look, a touch. It is anything that lifts another up.
~Plato

Here are some real-life examples of how you can be kind every day!

Smile

Hold the door open

Give an honest compliment

Thank someone who you appreciate

Be a good listener

Offer your help to someone

Ask the person who's serving you how their day is going

Share your snack or toy with someone

Pick up your toys in the playroom

Can you think of other ways to show kindness?

I chose HOPE as my word of the week this week.

Having hope or being hopeful can make all the difference in the world for someone…

*Research indicates that hope can help us manage stress and anxiety and cope with adversity. It contributes to our well-being and happiness and motivates positive action. Hopeful people believe they can influence their goals, and that their efforts can have a positive impact.

Why Hope Matters | Psychology Today Canada

A little story about when being hopeful was helpful…

Going to a playgroup with my friends is one of my most favorite things to do. The night before, I always make sure that my bag is packed with my blankie and snacks and I take the time to lay out my clothes because doing all this makes me feel happy and excited for what’s to come.

So you can imagine my surprise and super disappointment when I woke up the morning of my playgroup day with a really nasty cold. I was sneezing and coughing and my nose was all drippy and my body felt like it had been run over by a mighty machine. I told my mom I felt fine but I really didn’t and she knew that. Also, I might be contagious and I didn’t want any of my friends to get sick because of me.

This is when being hopeful comes in handy…

Mom reminded me that taking care of a body that is sick with a cold requires lots of rest time, healthy food, and plenty of fluids so that my body can heal.

So, instead of being grumpy, I chose to be hopeful that I would be feeling much better the following week and I focused on doing some stay-at-home activities that made me feel happier. Arts and crafts and video games helped.

Never ever give up on your dreams and never ever lose hope…

Love,

Iggy

So…

I choose to be hopeful.

I choose to be optimistic and positive.

I choose to be upbeat and cheerful.

I choose to look on the bright side.

Why?

Because I feel better about myself and the world around me when I act in these ways.

Can you think of a time when being hopeful helped you get through something difficult?
